Temperature and Population
How many people will die, if we reach the +2.0 degrees Celsius temperature limit?
Does anybody know?
Even an approximate number?
It is difficult to give an accurate number, because it is a totally new situation.
But I have found a way to estimate the number of deaths.
It took quite a bit of work. But in the end, the answer was obvious.
The answer is so obvious, that I am not going to tell you the answer.
I have done all of the work so far. It is about time that you pulled your weight.
Don’t worry. I am only asking you to look at a graph. Do you think that you could manage that?
This graph is showing a lot of information. So we will take it slowly.
The data plotted on the graph, is for 216 countries.
Each country has a coldest month.
The technical definition of the coldest month, is the month with the lowest monthly average low temperature.
The graph plots the temperature of the coldest month, for each country.
Each country has a hottest month.
The technical definition of the hottest month, is the month with the highest monthly average high temperature.
The graph plots the temperature of the hottest month, for each country.
Each country has a population.
The technical definition of the population, is (please use your imagination, I am not going to do ALL of the work).
The graph plots the population, for each country.
Each country is plotted as a rectangle.
The height of the rectangle goes from the temperature of the coldest month, to the temperature of the hottest month.
The width of the rectangle is the population of the country.
Let us look at an example. Find the yellow label which says “China”, and locate the large rectangle, above the label.
That large rectangle is China.
The temperature of China’s coldest month is about -2.0 degrees Celsius.
The temperature of China’s hottest month is about +30.3 degrees Celsius.
The grey line about half way up the rectange, is China’s average temperature. For China, this is about +15.0 degrees Celsius.
The population of China is about 1,420,062,022 (look at the width of the rectangle).
When the world reaches the +2.0 degrees Celsius temperature limit, the temperature of China’s hottest month, will be about +31.3 degrees Celsius (see the orange on the graph).
How many people will die in China, because of +2.0 degrees Celsius of global warming. Not many. Because even with +2.0 degrees Celsius of global warming, the temperature of China’s hottest month, will still be well below the temperature of many other countries present hottest month (and not many people are dying from the temperature in those countries).
For example, China with global warming, is a lot cooler than India is NOW. The temperature of India’s hottest month is currently about +36.3 degrees Celsius. So even with +2.0 degrees Celsius of global warming, the temperature of China’s hottest month is still about +5.0 degrees Celsius colder than the temperature of India’s hottest month, NOW.
If you don’t believe me, then look on the graph.
I am going to leave it up to you, to investigate the rest of the graph. There is a lot to learn.

Hold on a minute. What sort of questions do stupid people ask? Do they ask intelligent questions?
